Partners

Solar Impulse Partners have in common a pioneering spirit, a long-term vision and a desire to explore new horizons. They share the basic values of the project: exploration, technological innovation, competence, entrepreneurial expertise, passion, teamwork, dream and emotion.

Like Solar Impulse’s initiators, they are keen to use these values to promote renewable energies and the technologies needed for protecting the environment.

Main Partners

At the highest level of association with and contribution to the project are four Main Partners, each in a different field of activity. These partners are named on the airplane, on the pilots' uniforms and on those of the Solar Impulse Team, on all construction and operations sites and during all flight missions. Our Main Partners’s reputation and influence are essential to the success of the project. They help to relay its key messages and also benefit from the project’s enormous communications potential. Right now the four Main Partner slots have been filled. These Main Partners, who have already guaranteed the construction of the first two airplanes are SOLVAY, an international industrial Group active in Chemistry, OMEGA, a watch brand with a worldwide and ‘lunar’ reputation and a pioneer of Olympic timing, SCHINDLER, a leading global elevator and escalator provider, and a technology pioneer for clean mobility, and ABB, whose heritage of technology innovation in renewables, sustainable transportation and energy efficiency makes it also an ideal partner for Solar Impulse.

Official Partners

On the second level of partnership and next in order of importance, we have the Official Partners, again each exclusively representing its particular field of activity. Official Partners too have extensive communication rights to the project, including use of the official Solar Impulse names and symbols. They too are systematically identified by Solar Impulse at the official sites and during the different flight missions.

Mission Partner

H.S.H the Sovereign Prince, the Foundation Prince Albert II De Monaco provides its support, alongside the Government of Monaco, by accommodating the Mission Control Center during the world tour. The Solar Impulse team will be hosted by Masdar and Abu Dhabi at the start of January for testing and training before the start of the first solar-powered flight around the world, which is due to take place in March 2015.

Official supporters

The Official Supporters are the third Partnership level. They can associate themselves with the flight missions and take advantage of being an official name in a variety of communications and promotional activities for the duration of the project.

Official suppliers

At the fourth and last official partnership level we find the Official Suppliers. Official Partners enjoy various promotional rights, an official name and participation in the test flights.

Institutional and aeronautics partners

Solar Impulse can count of the knowledge and experience of major institutions and players in the worlds of science, aerospace and leading edge technology, keen to join in the solar adventure and integrate it into their respective technical and scientific fields. Their advice is as precious as the credibility and prestige they bring to the project.

Specialized Partners

The specialized partners bring competencies and know-how which are complementary and necessary to the development and realization of the project.
In this capacity, they play a fundamental role in the project's success.

In early March, the five-month journey spanning 35,000 km (22,000 miles) will begin in Abu Dhabi, and the Si2 will make its forth stopover in Myanmar, grounded in Mandalay for three days. Myanmar is the only Southeast Asia stop. The Government of Myanmar, together with the Embassy of Switzerland in Myanmar and Solar Impulse, is making the visit to Myanmar possible, with support from local partner First Myanmar Investment Co. Ltd. (FMI) and international partners Schindler and ABB.

Solar Impulse 2's visit is a significant milestone marking Myanmar's arrival to the international stage and will raise awareness on the pressing need for sustainable and innovative energy solutions. During the plane's stop in Mandalay, approximately 1,000 students from the surrounding universities will attend educational learning sessions, meeting with the pilots and gaining knowledge around renewable energies. Scheduled times for the public to enjoy a close-up view of the plane will be announced closer to the landing date.

"With the support of the President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, H.E. U Thein Sein, the Government and the people of Myanmar, we are a few short weeks away from a historical moment for the country, the energy industry and innovators across the globe," said Swiss Ambassador, Mr. Christoph Burgener. "An idea born in Switzerland, Solar Impulse seeks original solutions to achieve the impossible, teaching us that working together delivers superior outcomes. Similarly, as the Myanmar people come together, a brilliant future will be fostered for the country."

"The co-pilots and founders of Solar Impulse embody a spirit that can inspire present and future generations in Myanmar and around the world to be explorers in their own lives." said U Linn Myiang, Chief Operating Officer, FMI. "As a country blessed with many natural resources, the cause for renewable energies lies close to home. Much of our country's success lies in identifying technologies that promote sustainable energy. The Solar Impulse 2 reminds us that such innovation and technology is available with unrelenting persistence and imagination."

The Swiss pilots, Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg, both pioneers and innovators, are the driving force behind Solar Impulse and strong believers that exploring and pioneering spirit can change the world. After 12 years of planning and development, the plane will fly over the Arabian Sea, India, Myanmar, China, the Pacific Ocean, the United States, the Atlantic Ocean, and southern Europe or North Africa, before closing the loop by returning to the point of departure, Abu Dhabi.

The authorities and our partners in Myanmar are aware of the importance of clean technologies. I still remember flying in the Orbiter 2 over Myanmar. It was gorgeous to fly in a silent way over so many temples calling for inner peace and wisdom,” announced Bertrand Piccard, co-founder and pilot of Solar Impulse. André Borschberg, co-founder and pilot of Solar Impulse added, “I am looking forward to meeting students in Mandalay, organized by FMI, as Solar Impulse is also about working together to inspire the current and future generations of the world.”

"Schindler is very proud to be one of the main partners of Solar Impulse, with both sharing the same goal to push the limits in the development of innovative technology to safely move people with less energy. Operating in Myanmar since 1999, the company is thrilled to welcome the plane and the project team on the latest leg of a great journey”, said Willis Phua, General Manager of Schindler Myanmar.

"ABB’s vision is 'Power and productivity for a better world' which is why the landing of Solar Impulse in Myanmar is close to our hearts.  Both ABB and Solar Impulse are taking novel and creative approaches to solving future energy challenges in a responsible way,  and as Myanmar enters a new era of economic development, it has the opportunity to make decisions that have a positive impact for generations to come," said Johan de Villiers, Managing Director of Singapore and South-East Asia, ABB. "We need to raise awareness about the need to use energy more efficiently – and this is one message Solar Impulse will be taking around the world."

This March, Solar Impulse begins an attempt to be the first solar-powered airplane to fly around the world, powered only by the sun's rays. As it crosses India, the plane, “Solar Impulse 2”, will be hosted by The Aditya Birla Group.

Solar Impulse is the brainchild of pilots and founders Bertrand Piccard (Initiator and Chairman) and André Borschberg (CEO). A psychiatrist and explorer, Bertrand Piccard flew around the world in a hot-air balloon in 1999; and the design team is led by André Borschberg, seasoned flight design engineer, entrepreneur and former Swiss fighter pilot.

“Solar Impulse is delighted to partner with the Aditya Birla Group as our values and goals of promoting sustainable development are fully aligned. Aditya Birla's pioneering spirit coupled with its commitment to adopting new and innovative energy technologies compliments perfectly well the vision of our project. As our local Indian Host Partner, we look forward to working with Aditya Birla in organizing events and activities which will inspire both business and political decision makers and future leaders of tomorrow as to the enormous economic and social potential of clean technologies” declared Solar Impulse Founders Bertrand Piccard, Initiator and Chairman, and André Borschberg, CEO.

Says, Mr. Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of the Aditya Birla Group, “The Aditya Birla Group is delighted to be the India host to Solar Impulse 2 on its groundbreaking flight around the world. Our group sustainability strategy is to integrate sustainability issues into our business strategies for the future. To do this, we endeavour to link with leading thinkers and practitioners who stoke out-of-the-box approaches to ensure that businesses get geared to meet the demands of the future. Solar Impulse fits in with our strategy. Creativity, innovation and drive are the defining features for success. Solar Impulse epitomizes these characteristics, and most importantly drives the message of synergizing growth with responsibility. This is our common philosophy which will guide us as we aspire to be the leading Indian conglomerate in sustainable business practices across our global operations”.

This revolutionary single-seater aircraft is made of carbon fiber, with the wingspan of a Boeing 747, the weight of a family car. Over 17'000 solar cells and four lithium batteries supply the electric motors with enough renewable energy to fly day and night.

This team of leading-edge specialists includes mechanical engineers, aeronautical engineers, physicists and designers who have been working for over a decade to bring Solar Impulse from

drawing board to reality. The electrical engineers have risen to the challenge of achieving the delicate balance between maximum efficiency, the lightest possible weight and extreme reliability of the plane's photovoltaic cells.

Solar Impulse was built not just to fly around the world without a drop of fuel, but also to carry a message; demonstrating the effectiveness of clean technologies and the importance of sustainability, and showing what can be accomplished with pioneering spirit.

The Aditya Birla Group will be the host partner for the India leg of the Solar Impulse journey, with stops planned in Ahmedabad and Varanasi and will partner with the Solar Impulse Main Sponsors Solvay, ABB, Schindler and Omega to offer ground support to the world record attempt. It is expected that millions of people will follow the flight via social media. The sponsors, like the founders, hope the flight will change history.

Stating that they are honored to be a part of Solar Impulse's historical journey, Brisa’s CEO Hakan Bayman said, “Being the leader company of Turkish tire industry, we do not position ourselves solely as a tire manufacturer but as a value provider for all our stakeholders. In the light of our corporate vision statement ‘to innovate your journey’ sustainability and innovation are the top priorities in all of our operations. We attach great importance to being amongst Solar Impulse’s partners, as it reflects our vision splendidly.

Within our sustainability strategy consisting of economic, social and environmental aspects, we show great effort to reduce our negative impact on our planet and to contribute to society. We strongly believe that sustainability is the key to the future of journey. To realize this dream, we could not think of a better way than associating our name with a plane that uses no other fuel than pure sunshine! As Brisa, we believe we will gain experience from the Solar Impulse program, which will also help us raise awareness on subjects such as renewable energy and sustainability among the Turkish community.

Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg founders and pilots of Solar Impulse, stated they are very excited that Turkey will also a part of this historical journey through Brisa. They underlined the fact that they need strategic partners with a vision like Brisa’s in every country in order to spread renewable clean energy use around the globe.

Piccard said:"We can halve the energy consumption in the world if we replace all of the old and inefficient technologies with today's renewable, clean and more efficient energy systems. But we need to increase public awareness and demand aroused from public opinion. The previous millennium was the period of discovering and conquering the world. And this millennium should be a period where we will discover how to improve the quality of life.” And Borschberg continued “Countries such as Turkey, which do not have natural resources like oil and natural gas, should use this opportunity in their very public interest. As a supporter of Solar Impulse journey, Brisa has undertaken a critical responsibility in its country regarding the matter. We would like to thank them for their pioneering role in Turkey”.
